In 1955, inside a modest room on Davis‑Monthan Air Force Base, a group of airmen came together with a simple but powerful idea: create a financial resource built on trust, cooperation, and community. That idea became D.M.A.F.B. Federal Credit Union, the earliest version of what we now know as Vantage West Credit Union.
Vantage West Credit Union’s military roots; humble beginnings on base to serving more than 200,000 members across Southern Arizona today, our mission has stayed consistent: support the people who serve our community. Read more about our 70 years of financial service.
From One Room on Base to a Regional Credit Union

The original credit union branch on Davis‑Monthan wasn’t glamorous. No digital tools. No modern branch design. Just a desk, a ledger, and a belief that airmen deserved fair, accessible financial services.
That belief shaped everything that followed.
As Davis‑Monthan grew, so did the credit union. We expanded to serve civilian employees, veterans, and eventually the broader Southern Arizona community, but our military roots remained at the heart of who we are.
Today, Vantage West continues to honor that legacy through programs and partnerships that uplift military families, veterans, and those who support them.
Supporting Those Who Serve: Our Modern Military Partnerships
Vantage West’s connection to the military didn’t end when we outgrew that first room on Davis‑Monthan, it continues today through partnerships and programs that uplift service members and their families in meaningful, lasting ways.
Our long‑standing relationship with DM50, the civic group dedicated to supporting airmen at Davis‑Monthan, helps strengthen the bond between the base and the broader Tucson community. We also work closely with the Desert Thunder Squadron and the 355th Force Support Squadron, supporting morale‑boosting events, family programs, and initiatives that help airmen feel rooted and supported during every chapter of their service. Beyond the base, we champion local businesses like Kettle Heroes Popcorn, whose mission-driven work gives back to military families in powerful ways; from care packages to community fundraising.

Through financial donations, educational resources, and empowerment-focused programs, Vantage West continues to honor the legacy that began in that one-room barrack by investing in the people who serve our community every day.
Through financial donations, educational resources, and empowerment-focused programs, Vantage West continues to honor the legacy that began in that one-room barrack by investing in the people who serve our community every day.
Together, these efforts represent more than sponsorships, they’re a continuation of the mission that started in that one‑room barrack: to serve those who serve our community.
A Memory from the Early Days: Former Employee Reflects on the Culture That Shaped Us
While not every employee worked on the base itself, the spirit of service that began at Davis‑Monthan extended across every branch, including the Craycroft location, where former employee Renee Zubowicz experienced firsthand the culture that defined DM Federal Credit Union.
Her story captures the heart of what made the credit union special:
“I have fond memories of my time at the Craycroft Branch. During that period, all consumer loans from the various branches were centralized there, handled via email, phone, or in-person applications. I particularly remember a day when I stepped in to help the front teller line. I took a phone application and as a loan officer was able to give the member an immediate approval. He was thrilled to have his funds ready within an hour. I truly loved working for DM Federal Credit Union. Loved member interactions and the culture was wonderful, from our monthly potlucks to the quarterly branch breakfasts. It brings me great joy to see Vantage West Credit Union still going strong.”

Renee’s story reflects the same values that began on Davis‑Monthan: service, speed, care, and community. Those values carried from the barracks to every branch, shaping the culture that still defines Vantage West today.
